We want the CONVERGE project to be as sustainable as possible. We're still working out how we are going to do that, but in the meanwhile we have taken the following measures to limit our impact on the environment when we have team meetings:

  1. When possible team members will catch the train rather than fly to team meetings
  2. We will try to hold meetings in a communal setting, sharing food rather than eating out, and sourcing food locally
  3. We will limit the use of printed material - we have a dropbox for file sharing so we can share files online.

We'll be adding to this list as we think up more ways to reduce our impact.

We've also been monitoring our project's carbon footprint, using a conference and event carbon calculator created by the Schumacher Institute.

So far we have held 2 meetings in Budapest (Hungary) and Skanor (Sweden).

Our impact is not insignificant.

The sum impact of our meetings so far:

  • 32 people participated
  • Over 6 days
  • Consumed 56 evening meals
  • with 75 individual project accomodation overnight stays
  • 21 plane journeys were taken including:
    • 3 long haul
    • 9 medium haul
    • 9 short haul
  • 2 people car-shared
  • 6  train journeys were taken including:
    • 1 trans european journey
    • 3 medium length journeys
    • 2 short journeys
  • And we've generated 11,344.87 kg of CO2 - 11.34 tonnes

Information on how these figures were generated is available from the Schumacher Institute's conference and event carbon calculator webpage.

Take a look at individual meeting's carbon calculatons from 2009 (Budapest, Hungary and Skanor, Sweden)

Our next team meeting is in Iceland in April.

We will be doing as much as we can to avoid creating carbon emissions and other ecological impacts.  More details of the work we are doing to make our research as sustainable as possible will be updated to this page over the project's 4 year duration.
